Bridging the town-country divide

Posted by Russell Rees-Davies on April 13, 2007 9:10 AM |

IT WAS good to read in the Daily Post how some North Wales farm businesses showcased their livestock at a London pub.
Along went a cow, sheep, lambs, hens, sheepdogs and even a mountain pony to the Spaniards Inn, a former Welsh drovers’ pub near Hampstead Heath.

The idea, according to organiser Daphne Tilley, was to bridge the town versus country divide.

How wonderful!

Martin Sivill, a farmer from Tremeirchion who took sheep and a cow said: “Well over 1,000 visitors came to see the animals. They couldn't believe the size of a cow. They were gobsmacked.
"It was wonderful to see their eyes light up.”

This is exactly the kind of thing I was writing about in my blog dated March 13, 2007.
I experienced similar comments 60 years ago when my parents invited friends from Liverpool to visit our North Wales farm.
It highlights the point I was making that farming as an industry has to do a lot more of this kind of promotion to bridge the gap between town and country.
